Abendan - Agan Wedding Album

I made a promise several years ago to some of my former classmates in college to take care of their multimedia needs when they get married.

First of the list to tie the knot is my dear friend Arlene Agan. She got married to a very respectable gentleman Rheff Abendan. The civil wedding ceremony was held at the Rigodon Hall of Hacienda Palmeras, Zamboanga City last December 28, 2008.

Post-nuptial shoot was done in the Zamboanga City Hall. It was a great location as the Spanish architecture was adorned with colorful lights for Christmas. Fortunately, we were allowed to go inside the City Hall even if it was closed.

Finally, I got the time and energy to start blogging again. Before moving forward to my insights, tutorials, news and what not on multimedia, and animation, graphics and technology for 2009, let me take you to my best moments in past year.

2008 was the most fruitful year for me. I was recognized in the national scene for blogging and animation, conducted numerous seminars and trainings, featured in a local daily several time, served as resource person in a MagTV Chavacano episode, designed print materials for various organizations, moved to a another University for a teaching position and many more.

I have continue giving trainings in 2008. I have been doing this for the past 6 years. The past year was focused on multimedia and animation. The National Computer Center recruited me to train IT personnel from different Local Government Units in Mindanao. I also conducted Summer workshops for the Ateneo's Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago. This also gave an opportunity for several of my students to serve as resource speaker as I assigned them to some topics that I believed they can already handle. Partnership with the Southern City Colleges was also created to provide trainings on multimedia in Zamboanga.

2008 was a good year for my freelance works. I was able to get big breaks from major companies and events such as Petron and the Mindanao Bloggers Summit. Olympio Commercial Inc. in Zamboanga City also contracted me for their video editing jobs. My group and I also covered many of the activities during last year's Hermosa Festival. We also introduced doodle art during the Tiange Tiange in Catribo Complex. Most of the works that I've done can be seen on my Multiply space.

I couldn't believe with the recognitions that I received during the past year. I got nominated in the Philippine Blog Awards and was able to get in as finalist in 3 categories and 4 (Best Technology Blog, Best Techonology Blog Single Post and Blogger's Choice Award). Altough I did not win any award, being lined up with popular bloggers in the country is already a great honor. Last year, I was featured in local dailies and TV show. I was a little shy, but I realized that they were good opportunities for me.

Before 2008 ended, I was given an opportunity to talk in BPO Summit Philippines, which is the gathering for the country's BPO sectors. I discussed about the Industry- Academe Learning Experience of Ateneo de Zamboanga Univerty's Multimedia and Animation program which I started in 2005. It was nerve-racking experience, but once I started talking all the hesitations disappeared. I was very happy when one participant said that it was refreshing to see a new face in the animation track as I was a first-time speaker in the activities of the Animation Council of the Philippines.

The best thing that happened to me in 2008 is my transfer to my alma mater (WMSU). I finally decided to apply for a teaching position there. Instantly, I felt at home with my new school. It was great to meet new sets of students who are very eager to learn. I was again energized to teach and move on with my teaching career.

In spite of the other negative experiences, 2008 was generally a succeful year. I am looking forward to 2009 for more opportunities and success. :)

Still Alive

Just several days ago, an online friend (Patsy) left a message on my chat box inquiring about this blog. Yes, this blog is still alive. hehehe.. Unfortunately, schedule and circumstances stole me away from blogging these past weeks. But I will return soon with a vengeance... hehehe...

I'm off to my hometown Dapitan City in about 2 hours from writing to welcome 2009 and celebrate the birthday of my wonderful mother, Newlita. When I come back to my desk here in Zamboanga, I will be blogging about what is in store for me and Zamboanga City in 2009 in terms of multimedia and animation. I have some great news and plans which I would like to share to you in the coming days. As of now, let us enjoy the holidays and advance Happy New year.

Zamboanga Bloggers make mark

Mindanao Bloggers Summit organizers have recognized the existence of a growing blogging community in Zamboanga City. In a recent post in the Mindanao Bloggers site, Blogie mentioned that the recent development in the city prompted him to consider Zamboanga as the venue of the MBS3 along side Cagayan de Oro City. He hopes to announce his decision before the year ends.

I know it's going to be a tough call to host a big event, but thinking about the next Blogging Summit to be conducted in the city makes me excited. It would put the city on the map of the blogosphere and would encourage more blogs to hail from Zamboanga and even the rest of region 9.

SCC sharing computer mission

Below is the article published in Daily Zamboanga Times under Pep Talk column of Mr. Dante Corteza. The article talks about the series of seminars I conducted at the Southern City Colleges during the semestral break.

Asia’s Latin City is going full speed in terms of information technology. I vividly remember STI-Zamboanga was the first IT school in Western Mindanao that ventured into this industry. At that time, I was really apprehensive in tapping computer keys for fear that I might lose some of the computer data or even “destroy” the computer itself.

But thanks to the assurance, persistence and confidence of STI-Zamboanga in us, people in this region are now more computer literate and are gainfully employed in different companies needing high-tech staff.

And this IT dream of STI is shared by Southern City Colleges (SCC) today. SCC is innovating itself in the field of education by offering courses that are in demand here and abroad. One of these is Computer Education.

During this semestral break, SCC successfully sponsored an Information Technology Series of Seminars to enhance computer skills of computer savvy people. Participants from different government agencies and private companies including individuals were invited to it by SCC Computer College Dean Margaret Bello.

Margaret invited Multimedia lecturer and national IT-awardee Ryann Elumba as the main resource speaker for this computer event. Ryann taught Adobe Illustrator, Flash Cartooning, Flash Actionscripting, and Page Lay-Out using In Design. These are the basic computer knowledge most companies are requiring from their prospective IT employees. Filipinos who are good in these areas are in demand abroad and they are one of the highly paid employees nowadays.

According to Bello, this is just the beginning of the series of computer lectures and seminars SCC is planning to implement. This is one way of sharing the latest computer technology updates in the world today she said. She was grateful that Ryann, a well-trained IT professor, has shared this mission of the school.

Partnering with Ryann was Julnisar Pajiri, one of SCC computer faculty members, who handled the 3-day JAVA trainings of the fire personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection. He taught them how to develop their own personal information systems.
My high esteem to SCC President Edwin Caliolio for innovating this school into a world standard of educational system. If you pass by SCC, try to drop in and see how it has transformed itself in recent years.

What's Next? Life after ADZU

Tomorrow is the start of the 2nd semester for most of the schools in the country. In my case, it's going to be a very different semester as I won't be teaching anymore in Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Starting tomorrow, I will be reporting at the Information Technology and Systems Engineering Department of Western Mindanao State University.

Actually, it's going to be a homecoming for me. In 2002, I graduated from my BS in Computer Engineering and BS Computer Science degrees in WMSU. After graduation, I worked as a research field surveyor for a project headed by the now University President Grace Rebollos. After my 3-month contract with the project, I tried my luck in Manila and worked as instructor in New Horizons Computer Learning Center and then as a technical support engineer at Sykes Asia Inc. When I got tired of the lifestyle in Manila, I decided to come back to Zamboanga City and taught in ADZU.

The past five years have been very fruitful for me. There were many opportunities that ADZU gave me such as allowing me to pioneer the CSIT Week celebration, Automation of the Basic IT Proficiency Examination, ICT Student Research Presentation, 1st Digital Art Exhibit and develop the Multimedia and Animation program which is the first of its kind in Mindanao.

But just like many good relationships, my time in Ateneo has come to an end. What's next for me now?

I am glad that my new boss, Maam Olegario gave me the chance to teach multimedia and animation in WMSU. This is actually an opportunity for me to expand the promotion of the industry in the region. Aside from my new job in WMSU, I am also given the opportunity to give my consultancy services to other schools and organizations in the region who are also interested in offering similar programs. In January, my business associates and I will also be starting something that envisions to give multimedia and animation graduates a chance to work in the industry without leaving the comforts of home.

At the moment, all I can do is to hope for the best. I am hoping that everythig will fall in the right places for me and the things that I want to do. I am also hoping that I would have more partners who can help bring forward the region and make it as a Multimedia, animation, IT and off-shoring destination.

The 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit is going to happen this weekend in General Santos City. I'm a bit sad I cannot make it because of a prior commitment with a client. I would like to send my greetings to the organizers and participants. I know that the event will be fruitful for Mindanao.

Avel sent me copies of the poster to be posted around major spots in Zamboanga. Hopefully more bloggers from the city can make it to the summit or at least more Zamboangueños will be encouraged to start blogging.

I hope that there will be a webcast of the event. :)

Pilar College Alumni Association launches website

The Alumni Association of Pilar College Zamboanga City launched its official website last October 10, 2008 at their Audio Visual Room. The website address if http://www.pcaa.org.ph/.

A number of alumni from different batches witnessed the unveiling of their website which they deem necessary in connecting with other alumni from around the globe. The website was made possible through the effort of the PCAA officers headed by Mrs. Ma. Teresa Makasiar and Computer Studies Department of Pilar College through Mr. Carlo Garcia.

Master in IT is now available in Zam Pen

Relative to the promotion of quality human resouce in the field of Information and Communications Technology and in compliance with CMO 53, series 2006 requiring all deans and faculty in the field of ICT to finish a Master's Degree in the field of specialization, the University of San Jose-Recoletos will be offering Master in Information Technology (MIT) in consortium with Dipolog Medical Center College Founcdation, Inc., starting second semester of SY 2008-2009. Support the Fair Access to Capital Bill

A proposal to help small animation and software companies was presented by the Committee on Science Engineering and Technology (COMSTE) during a hearing with Philippine lawmakers. This seeks to create a law that will allow government- owned financial institutions to extend loans to IT-enabled services. The proposal is referred to as the "Fair Access to Capital Bill".

Many start-up companies such as the one that my partners and I are coming up do not have physical assets. If the law passes, it will allow the use of intellectual property and billing invoices as collateral.

I am hoping that this proposal will become a law. This will greatly help boost IT services in the Philippines.

ADZU BSIT Stop-Motion Voter's Choice Result

Yesterday was the closing ceremonies of the CSIT Month of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. During the event, the winners for the Digital Art Competition was awarded. The winners are the following:

Aside from the awarding of Digital Art Competition, the BSIT group also organized a doodle event while the closing ceremonies are going on. The doodle event is a first in Zamboanga.

Oprah stars in a Disney animation

The queen of talk shows, Oprah Winfrey will star in the upcoming Walt Disney animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”

Oprah Winfrey will voice Eudora, the mother of Princess Tiana, the first black princess to appear in a Disney animated film. Set in New Orleans French Quarter, the jazz-fuelled musical will be written and directed by 'The Little Mermaid's' John Musker and Ron Clements.
The film is due for a late 2009 release.

2nd PBA Awards Night

I arrived early at One Esplanade last Sunday to attend the Philippine Blog Awards. At first I was very intimidated with the bloggers who were present. I didn't know anybody there. Fortunately, Greg of Dogs are Us was very friendly and we started to have a conversation. Wence of Byahengpinoy was also there with us. Before the event ended, I approached several bloggers for a quick chat and photo ops.

This blog made it that night as finalist for Best Blog- Technology, Best Single Post- Technology and Blogger's Choice Awards. Unfortunately, I did not win any trophy. As I said during a camera interview that night, I wasn't expecting to win any award because the competition was tough. Being included as finalist is already an honor since this blog is only a year old.

Kudos to the organizers of the Philippine Blog Awards 2008. Congratulations to all the winners. You deserve it guys!

Millions of hugs to those who voted for me for the Blogger's Choice Award. Salamat din sa lahat ng napilitan na bomoto. hehehe... I hope this feat serves as an inspiration to bloggers and would be bloggers in Zamboanga Peninsula.

BSIT Visits Animation Studios in Manila

Last September 19, 2008 (Friday) my 4th year BSIT students and I visited TOIE and ABS-CBN for a visit on their animation studios. We were fortunate to be toured in their company despite the very short notice.

TOIE Philippines which is located at the Cyber One Building, Cyber Plaza in Eastwood, Libis, Quezon City is a subsidiary of TOIE Animation in Japan. TOIE is the producers of famous Japanese Anime such as Slam Dunk, Dragon Ball and One Piece. It was my third time to visit the TOIE studio and the first time for my students. The students were introduced to the process of TOIE in making anime films. They were toured to the different departments and introduced to their artists.

The next stop was ABS-CBN Animation department. The students saw the process of creating Super Inggo (the animated TV series which will be shown in ABS-CBN on October). We were also given the opportunity to visit the Special Effects department and was fortunate to have a sneak peek on a upcoming big fantaserye. In addition, we were able to see an actual motion capture machine.

The studio tour opened the eyes of my students in the real-world setup. It also verified that what they learned in my subjects are very useful for them in the future.

How to insert ñ/ Ñ

I got a message from a blogger asking how to create ñ/ Ñ using her laptop computer. To insert this character using laptop, just press the Fn key and ALT key at the same time. While holding these keys, press 164 for ñ or 165 for Ñ.

Hope this answer her question.

Addendum: I forgot to mention that "Num Lock" should be pressed. Do not use the white digits. Instead use the blue ones.

It has been a very busy week. Last Monday I had a taped interview with ABS-CBN Zamboanga for a feature about multimedia and animation in Zamboanga. It was quiet a hard task to do because I am not used to speaking in front of the camera. I'm usually a "behind the camera" guy.

I also had to prepare a demo reel of the projects of BSIT students of Ateneo which will be used as a backup clip for the interview. Please enjoy the video below.

First Week of September

The past days were sleepless as I was finishing the post production stage of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Institutional Advertisement. As I am writing this post, I am rendering the video which will take several hours. While waiting for the rendering process to complete, I've decided to update.

Filipinos are crazy about Christmas celebration. September 1 marks the start of the very long holidays and merry making. For our Mulsim brothers and sisters, the 1st day of September for this year is the start of the 30-day fasting. In my case, the first day of September is a start of my preparations to embark in another phase in my life.

Yesterday, I had a meeting with my business partners to finally set our plans for the multimedia company that we will be starting soon. One of the things that I will be doing is to come up with our company portfolio.In the coming months, we will be launching the website and marketing materials for the company. Building a multimedia company has been in my dreams for several years now. I'm happy to say that this is already becoming a reality. If you have multimedia needs in the future, you know who to contact. Right? :)

September 1 was also the launch of the promotions for the Mindanao Bloggers Summit which will be held in General Santos City on October 25, 2008. Fortunately, one of my designs was chosen as the official poster for the event. Avel of General Santos City has also invited me to be one of the convenors of the conference. As the one in-charge for Zamboanga Peninsula, I am planning to conduct blogging seminars to various schools to promote blogging and MBS. As of the moment, I already have initial talk with Ms. Margaret Bello of Zamboanga Southern City Colleges for a blogging seminar in her school. There has also been initial agreement with Jerome Locson to organize bloggers in Zamboanga.

This week is also a start for my preparations to leave Ateneo. There are several tasks that I need to finish before my last day on October 31. For several days, some people have been asking if my resignation was true. I always reply them with a smile. This post already confirms my resignation from my teaching position in ADZU. I won't go to discussing the reasons of my resignation anymore. What is important is that my decision is something good for me. :)

September is going to be a very hectic month. I should start taking my vitamins again to make sure that I will still stand at the end of the month. :)

Ateneo Digital Art Competition

The CSIT Academic Organization of Ateneo de Zamboanga University is conducting a Digital Art Competition for its Science and Technology Month celebration.

This competition is only open to ADZU students. Participants will create a digital artwork, may it be a photomontage, fractal art, vector art or photo manipulations, using a photo editing software such as Photoshop, Corel Photopaint, GIMP, etc. Deadline of submission of entries is September 12, 2008.

Philippine Blog Awards Update and Pacontests

At the moment, I assume that the organizers of the Philippine Blog Awards (PBA) 2008 have already received the 5-post submissions of the nominees for their 2nd salvo. I was fortunate that 2 of my blogs (Seed Interactive and Hola Filipinas) were nominated. I'm eager to know in the coming days if my blogs made it to the final list of nominees.

While waiting for the final list of nominees, we can participate in several competitions that PBA is running at their website. These are in partnership with the co-presentors of the event.

First, Nokia sponsors the Kaleidoscope of Connections Award. The challenge is to produce a video of how you connect with others using mobile technology. The video must run for 1 minute and maximum of 5 minutes and be uploaded in the given (Kaleidoscope) Share on Ovi site. The video must also be uploaded in their personal blogs with a link back to the Ovi site. Posts will be judged on concept, style, and its popularity.

Second, LevelUp Games is conducting its Level Up! Gaming Blog Award. This competition is open to Filipino blogs about gaming (console/handheld/online) in general or about Level Up!’s games. Nomination process is until September 2008. Submit your blogs now!

Seed Interactive Turns 1

How to Convert VCD Movie to AVI

Today, I received a video editing work from Olympio Commercial Inc. I had to edit a video which was already compressed as VCD which is in dat format. Dat files cannot be imported in video editing software. To be able to edit the movie, I needed to convert it to AVI format.

There are free downloadble format conversions in the Internet. Hoewever, most of them have limitations. Since I am a Windows user, I don't need to download additional applications to convert the movie. Here are the steps that I used to convert the VCD files:

Open the VCD movie in Windows Media Player.
Go to File > Save As. The Save As dialog box appears.
In the Save As dialog box, type the file name and append the .avi extension.
Click on Save.

The AVI file only works in Windows Movie Maker. If you are using other video editing software, you can not still use the file. To complete the conversion process, you need to follow these steps:

Open Windows Movie Maker.
Import the saved file.
Click on File> Save Movie File. The Save Movie Wizard appears.
Specify the location and file name.
Choose AVI as the movie type.
Click on Next to finish the conversion.

You are now ready to use the file in other video editing software.

A Bigger, Better Animahenasyon Festival

We are at it again! said this year's Animahenasyon Festival Programmer Ricky Orellana. We are once again inviting professional and amateur/student Filipino animators to join the 2nd Animahenasyon 2008:Pinoy Animation Festival. The event, which is spearheaded by the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc., is now on its second year and the organizers are promising to give local animation enthusiasts a broader and better program. Definitely, the scope is bigger this year, Orellana said. We want to give festival-goers a larger view of what Philippine animation by screening earliest works done by animation masters. According to Orellana, last year's festival has seen a lot of professional animators asking for advanced workshops. That's why this time there will be master classes for professionals and enthusiasts. There will also be classes on visual storytelling, film language, production design, Asian and Japanese animation, and visual effects, he said. Last year's festival screened over 150 original Filipino animation works and featured a two-day conference with Filipino US-based animator Ronnie del Carmen of Pixar animation as guest of honor keynote speaker.

The support was overwhelming, said Orellana. We are thankful to the animators who submitted very accomplished works as well as to the movie-goers who went out of their way to watch the screenings. In fact, the week-long event was even extended for a longer run at the Indie Sine Robinson's Galeria. I thought that it was a very successful festival, said Del Carmen. I was very impressed with the animators. They were undaunted and courageous in pursuing their passion. In fact, so impressed was Del Carmen that he even agreed to give a talk in Naga for the regional extension of the festival. We have very accomplished animators, he said. These animators have contributed over the years to animated content the world over on very popular properties. If that isn't about being world-class, I don't know what is. We are known to be reliable and versatile, able to tackle the work and meld into what the project needs and get the job done.

Last year's festival really proved that there is a very active animation industry in the Philippines, said Orellana. And this year, we are hoping to have more participants and more original works. And just like last year, 2nd Animahenasyon 2008 will feature 10 categories: one minute up to five minutes; 6 minutes up to 20 minutes; 21 minutes up to 40 minutes; Full-animated feature (more than 40 minutes); music video; OBBs, TVCs, infomercials, demo reels; and TV series. All of them are open for professional and amateur/student animators. Some of the award-winning animation entries last year were Jeff Capili's Malaya (Best Animated Short, professional division), RJ Mabilin's WWII (Animated Music Video, professional division), Valroman Francisco's Pop (Animated Music Video, amateur division), and Anna Katrina Bigornia's My Pet (Viewers' Choice Award). The festival also honored the late Larry Alcala with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The deadline for the submission of entries is on October 8, 2008.

InDesign Lesson: Changing Units of Measurements

When creating a document in InDesign for the first time, the unit of measurement used for the size and margins are in in millimeters. Personally, I can visualize more the settings of the document if inches is used instead of millimeters. If you would like to change the unit to suit your taste, here are the steps:

Select Edit from the menu.
Select Preferences.
Click on Units & Increments. The Preferences dialog box appears.
Select the unit of your choice in the Horizontal and Vertical drop-down boxes.
Click OK to accept your choices.

InDesign Lesson: Creating a New Document

InDesign has replaced Adobe's Pagemaker as its prime layout software. If you have tried using Pagemaker before, learning InDesign would be very easy for you. If this is your first time to use this type of software, don't fret, the series of lessons will try to help you with your layout needs.

Let's start with creating a new document.
1. Open Adobe InDesign.
2. There are 2 ways to create a new document. You can start with creating a document from template or from a blank page. The InDesign Startup dialog box offers you this options.

In case you do not see the startup dialog box, you can create a new document by using the File menu. Click on File > New > Document or you can use the keyboard combination CTRL + N.

3. Once you have done step 2, a New Document dialog box will pop up which allows you to set the properties of your new document. Let's discuss the properties in the said dialog box.

When starting a document, you can already specify the number of pages. If you are not sure of the exact number of pages and you want to insert or delete pages, you can do so in the Layout menu. (This will be in our next lesson.)

The New Document box is almost the same as the Page Document in MS Word, so definitely this would be very easy for you except on some of the more technical properties. Similar to MS Word, you can also set the page size and orientation at startup.

On the other hand, you can also set the number of columns you need in your pages. For magazines and brochures, you usually use 3 columns. For tabloid, a four-column page is appropriate. The gutter can also be adjusted. Gutter is actually the space between the columns.

You can also set the margins of the page using the New Document dialog box. You can see that there is a Facing Pages checkbox at the top part of the dialog box. This affects the margin settings. If Facing Pages is checked, the Left and Right margins change to Inside and Outside. If you have a spread, the Inside margin pertains to the margin that is in the binding side. The outside margins are at the edges of the spread.

If you are done entering the settings of your new document, you can click on the OK button. Should you need same settings in your future projects, you can save them as a new document preset by clicking on the Save Preset button.

PGAN, CICT-NCC conducts training on Image Design and Editing

The provincial government of Agusan del Norte, in partnership with the Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) through the National Computer Center (NCC) - Field Operations Office of Zambonga City, successfully conducted the course “Image Design and Editing” last July 1-4, 2008 at the Computer Laboratory 3 of the College of Information Technology, Saint Joseph Institute of Technology, Butuan City.
This course was designed for webmasters, web designers, professionals, and college students who want to excel in art production program needed for presentation, advertisement, and marketing collaterals. It is a technical course designed as a tool for photo retouching, image editing, color painting, enabling one to produce quality output presentations. The skill will also be useful to enhance the design of the agency’s website.
The four-day training was well attended mostly by the government employees of the Local Government Units of Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, national agencies, and private firms. The projected participants were only 25 but during the conduct of the training, the registered attendees reached 32.
The course instructor, Mr. Ryann Z. Elumba of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, who is a teacher of Adobe Photoshop for 6 years, discussed the basic and advance features of the Adobe Photoshop CS2. The participants applied all what they have learned during every exercise. They were provided with computers while some participants used their own Notebook (laptop).
After the training, the participants were able to edit pictures and images for publication, create graphics and were able to know how to automate graphics for presentations and websites. The participants were provided with training kits that included manual, notebooks, pens and demo installer for photoshop.
Both the province and NCC are looking forward for more partnerships in conducting trainings. The participants also voiced their intentions to undergo training on Auto-CAD, LAN and Web Server Administration, Advance Digital Photography, and Video Editing. (by:lclujr)

I have been receiving email messages on competitions and conferences for the past days. Recently, the Executve Director of Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. forwarded an invitation to the Metafest 2008.

Metacafe, one of the world's largest video entertainment sites with 30 million unique visitors per month, and Microcinema International, a leading international exhibitor and specialty markets distributor of the "moving image arts," are teaming to create and curate MetaFest 2008.

MetaFest 2008 is a juried short-film festival that combines the best of the on- and off-line worlds.

MetaFest accepts films 10 minutes or less in length - animated, narrative, humorous, artistic, dramatic, documentary, mockumentary, music, experimental, alternative or avant-garde in any genre, format or style. There are no entry fees and multiple submissions are encouraged.

The jury will select a grand prize winner who will be awarded $5,000 cash and a "short-short" award winner for outstanding work in a video of three minutes or less who will receive $2,000 cash. Who said that techies don't know how to have fun? Last August 3, 2008, the College of Science and Information Technology Academic Organization celebrated its Grand Acquaintance Party at the Astoria Regency, Zamboanga City. The theme of the celebration was Pop Retro.

Personally, the celebration was overwhelming for me as it was the first time that I saw almost all students under the BSIT Multimedia and Animation program which I am the coordinating. I was happy to see the proof of the growth of the program in terms of student population. 4 years ago, the program only had around 25 students. Today, the program enrolled 173 students.

The Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI) is calling on all Filipino animators to submit their entries to the 2nd Animahenasyon 2008: Pinoy Animation Festival to be held on November 12-16, 2008.

The 2nd Animahenasyon 2008 aims to continue to showcase original content in Philippine animation and to recognize the Filipino talent in the field of animation, aiming for local and international animation excellence and competitiveness.

The competition is composed of a professional and a student/amateur divisions and includes the following categories: one minute up to five minutes; 6 minutes up to 20 minutes; 21 minutes up to 40 minutes; Full-animated feature (more than 40 minutes); music video; OBBs, TVCs, infomercials, demo reels; and TV series.

Entries must be made frame by frame, including computer graphics animation and must be submitted in the DVD format for pre-selection. They must also be submitted together with three (3) photo stills from the work; one (1) photo of the Animation Director; and brief biography of the Animation Director (not more than five sentences).

All entries will undergo a preliminary screening and the finalists will compete and be shown during the festival in November. Animators of chosen entries and their work will also be featured in all promo materials for the event.

Several months ago I transferred my blog to my own domain (seedinteractive.com) after subscribing to a promo of a hosting company. Unfortunately, the bandwidth quota is very low and thus my site always exceeds its limit during the middle of each month.I was planning to upgrade my account. However, account upgrade was not allowed and I should subscribe to a new plan with the hosting company.

Since using a free blog hosting is perfectly okay, I decided to come back to my original blog here in blogger. I realized that using blogger is the best option as the hosting is taken cared by a very reliable company. Once my site is up again, I will be moving all my previous post there to this blog.

For the first time in its 34-year history, the annual Metro Manila Film Festival has included an animation film as one of its official entries. Cutting Edge Productions' Dayo, directed by Robert Quilao with Artemio Abad Jr. and Eric Cabatug, was chosen as one of the eight official entries in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival Philippines, which kicks off on Dec. 25, Christmas Day.

Other official entries, as announced by Julie Borje, chair of the Selection Committee yesterday, are Baler (Viva Communications) , Desperadas 2 (Regal Entertainment, Inc.), Shake, Rattle & Roll X (Regal Entertainment, Inc.), Magkaibigan (Maverick Films, Inc.), One Night Only (Canary Films); Escaleras and Ungasis (20 years After) (OctoArts Films) and Tanging Ina Nyong Lahat (Star Cinema).

Unlike last year which had nine official entries, this year's entries are down to eight since all of them will be shown simultaneously as one batch during the 10-day run of the filmfest. Last year, the entries were spread out into two batches: The first shown on Dec. 25 and the second on Jan. 1 early this year.

This year's official entries were chosen on the basis of the following criteria: Story, creativity, innovativeness, global appeal, commercial viability, Filipino cultural/historical value, and the production outfit's capacity to produce the film in time for the December filmfest.

Video Shoot for ADZU AD 2008

The College of Science and Information Technology was assigned to produce the next institutional advertisement of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Last Saturday, May 17, 2008, the Animation Laboratory of ADZU got busy with the shoot of the said ad.

The ADZU Ad will be shown during the school-to-school visit of the Office of Admission. Last year, I was involved in the production of the ad as the video editor. For this year's installment, I worked as the Director. The concept of the ad is hip and integrates animation and compositing.

I will be posting the ad here soon. Thanks to the BSIT students and hosts for their time and help in the production. Kudos also to Romeo Rabajante Jr. for successfully coordinating the whole shoot.

Photoshop 101: Replace Color

With the Replace Color tool of Photoshop, you can change the color of this flower to pink. The Replace Color Tool can be accessed from the Image > Adjustments menu.

The Replace Color dialog box contains options for adjusting the hue, saturation, and lightness components of the selection. (Read Digital Imaging Basics for the definition of these properties.)

Here are the steps to change the color of the flower to pink:

1. Click on the Image menu and then select Adjustments and click on Replace Color. The Replace Color dialog box opens .

Notice the three eyedropper tools in the Replace Color dialog box. The first selects a color; the second adds a color to the sample; the third removes a color from the sample.

2. Using the Eyedropper Tool, click on any part of the flower in the image window to sample the color.

3. Drag the Fuzziness slider to adjust the tolerance level. Fuzziness controls the degree to which related colors are included in the mask. Make sure that the Selection Radio button is selected.

4. If the mask display includes any white areas that are not part of the flower, get rid of those by using the Subtract From Sample eyedropper and click those areas in the image window.

5. In the Replacement area of the Replace Color dialog box, drag the Hue slider, the Saturation slider, and the Lightness slide until you get the desired color. In this tutorial, the color should be pink.

6. Click OK to apply the changes.

7. Save your file.

Photoshop 101: About Layers

In my opinion, the most important lesson in Photoshop is how to use layers and the layers palette. Layers allow you to work on one image element without affecting others. You can relate layers to a wedding cake with different pieces of cakes stacked on top of the other. A certain layer of cake can be decorated differently from the others.

To work with layers, you have to use the Layers palette. If you can’t find the palette, you can retrieve it by clicking on the “Window” menu and clicking on Layers or simply hitting F7. The palette contains the following parts:

Palette options - click the triangle in the upper right corner of the palette to expand the options. It contains commands for working with layers.
Opacity - represents the transparency of the layer. You can adjust the value from 0% to 100%.
Layer name - you can double click on the layer name to rename it. Specifying a descriptive name helps identify the content of the layer when working with large projects.
Delete Layer - to remove a layer from the documen, select the layer and click this button. You can also drag the layer to this button to delete it from the document.
Create a New Layer - clicking this button creates a blank layer wherein you can draw, paint or paste an image.
Create a New Group - when working on large documents with a number of layers, grouping them together is a good idea. When you click on this button a folder is created to group your layers.
Create a New Fill or Adjustment Layer - applies color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing pixel values.
Add Layer Mask - it allows you to mask (or cover) certain portions of the image without deleting the information contained in them.
Add Layer Style - allows you to use different layer effects or filters.
Link Layers - You can link two or more layers or groups. Unlike multiple layers selected at the same time, linked layers retain their relationship until you unlink them.

Today we are celebrating the 2008 Earth Day. There have been a lot of buzz about the situation of our environment and climate change and how it is affecting every one of us. It's not enough that only the government agencies and environmentalists move to save our planet. Each human being has a responsibility to take part in this endeavor.

As an educator, my responsibility is to facilitate awareness to students on how they can contribute in saving the environment. Today, I took time from my Multimedia class to show "The Inconvenient Truth" documentary. They are also required to write a blog post on how they can contribute in this endeavor. In the coming posts I will be quoting some of their ideas on how to save the planet and the environment. In the meantime, please watch this video created by a BSIT-II student about the Earth Day celebration. This was submitted as a requirement in their After Effects class.

For my basic After Effects class during the second semester of SY 2007-2008, I ask my students to come up with an Opening Billboard of a TV Show. Tennyl Dhem Canlas submitted this wonderful OBB which features characters from "The Sims". The movements of the characters are sometimes awkward but as a student project this video shows a lot of potential. Kudos Tennyl!

I delivered this speech during the Junior Pinning ceremony of Computer Technologies Institute Inc. (COMTECH) at the Marcian Garden Convention Center last March 10, 2008. This is my firs time to be invited as a guest speaker.

I am honored to be invited to speak today in front of this enthusiastic crowd. This moment signifies the fruition of my works and advocacies. One of my goals is to be able to develop the Multimedia and Animation industry in the region. I am elated that this goal is already coming into reality. Earlier today, we in ADZU launched the first ever Digital Art exhibit in the Zamboanga City. Projects of my students in Graphics Design and Animation are being showcase in ADZU's Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago. In addition, there are also invitations for me to talk or give trainings to other schools and offices in the region. This verifies that there is already a growing interest in Multimedia and Animation in the region.

The Multimedia and Animation industry is one of the priorities of the Philippine Government. This industry brings millions of revenue in the Philippine economy. Did you know that most of the Japanese anime's that we see on television today are being animated here in the Philippines? Dragon ball, One Piece, Sailor moon, etc. Some of the Hanna Barbera cartoons were also created here in the Philippines. Fantasy series are also a hit in our major TV networks these days. This gives multimedia artists more opportunities. The demand for websites and Interactive media are also significantly increasing. There is really a great demand.

The number of multimedia and animation studios is continuously increasing. This means that there is a growing demand for this type of industry, yet, there is a small supply of artist and animators. In fact, there are only 5 schools in the Philippines that offer a course that trains students in this field. I am glad to tell you that ADZU is one of these schools. In fact, ADZU is the only school in Mindanao that offers this type of course. The Animation Council of the Philippines, DTI and TESDA are encouraging schools to offer a program related to this industry.

Our program is a result of hard work and research. I can remember a time when no one listened to me when I was toying idea to offer the program. My persistence was recognized when an animation project caught the attention of the administration. My experience in research and leadership provided me a strong backup to plan and implement the program. I always attribute this to the things I learned when I was in college.

Since ADZU's Multimedia and Animation program is becoming stable this year. My next step is to help other institutions in putting up a course similar to ours. This endeavor will produce more competent artists and animators in the region. It is now the time to collaborate with other institutions for bringing regional development. I hope that in few years time, multimedia and animation studios are established in the city. This will also bring forth economic growth in our region by producing jobs.

I am sharing this to you tonight to show you that great things are not produced by accident. Success is the result of intelligent planning, commitment and focused effort. I understand that you are now culminating a chapter in your student lives and that you are now ready to embark on a greater task which is your practicum. You are fortunate that Comtech facilitates this for you to ensure that you will be able to apply what you have learned for the past year. I would like to ask you to take this seriously. This opportunity can lead you to a bright future. This is crucial as it will mold your attitude towards work and interpersonal relationship. I always tell my students that there are a lot of great things that they can learn outside the four corners of the classroom. Most often than not, you also be experiencing problems and frustrations during your practicum. Take these challenges and make it a positive experience for you. Learn from it. I always believe that experience is the greatest teacher.

I know of a lot of students who take opportunities for granted. I hope that all of you tonight will ponder on my words and realize that what is ahead of you is a great chance for you to learn and build your future. Your commitment and effort to excellence will ensure you to reach your goals.

We could remember the controversy on how Angelica Panganiban's pictures in the Maxim Magazine was allegedly edited to make it sexier. Photoshop can actually do the trick. To remove the cellulite in your model's body, you can use the liquify feature of Photoshop. Watch the video below to see a demonstration on the liquify feature.

My NCC Digital Design and Editing Training

National Computer Center, Zamboanga City organized a Digitial Design and Editing Training on March 24 to 28, 2008. I was invited to serve as the resource speaker for the said training. The participants are from LGUs and schools in Mindanao. We covered color theory, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and principles of layout and design. I was glad that the participants enjoyed and gained something from the training. They are also interested in learning additional skills in multimedia such as animation. I hope that they will be able to utilize what they learned from the training when they go back to their offices and community.

Photoshop 101: Using the Selection Tools

The selection tools in Photoshop allows user to choose a portion of an image to apply effects, change property settings and copy or delete. The selection tools similar to how text selection in MS Word is being done. If you would like to apply bold style to a text in MS Word, you need to highlight first the text. Similarly, in Photoshop, if you would like to apply an effect to a portion of an image, you need to select it first.

What are the tools that you can use to select a portion of an image? Photoshop has three types of selection tools: the Marquee, the Lasso and the Magic Wand.

The Marquee Tools

The marquee tools are used to select a specific regularly shaped area. The marquee tools include the Rectangular, Elliptical, Single Row and Single Column Marquees.

To use the marquee tools:

1) Select a marquee tool: Rectangular (for a rectangular selection), Elliptical (for an elliptically shaped selection), Single Row (for a one-pixel wide row) or Single Column (for a one-pixel wide column). Note: The marquee button on the toolbox is a menu. To be able to switch from one marquee type to another, hold you mouse while pressing left click or right click on the marquee button.

2) Drag over the area you want to select. Hold down the Shift key if you want to constrain the selection to a square or a circle.

The Lasso Tools

The lasso tools are used to select an irregular area. These tools include the Lasso, the Polygonal Lasso and the Magnetic Lasso. The lasso tool is more dynamic than the marquee tool because it allows you to select items irregularly. For example, if the you would like to select only the flower in our example image, you can easily select it by using the lasso tool. If you would like to select the portion completely freehand, then you use the lasso tool. On the other hand, if you want to create your selection using straight edges, then you use Polygonal Lasso Tool. In this tutorial, I will only discuss the Polygonal Lasso tool as this is the most reliable among the lasso tools.

To use the Polygonal Lasso Tool:

1) Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool from the Toolbox.

2) To draw a straight-edged segment of the selection, click at the desired beginning and end points of the segment.

3) To draw a freehand segment of the selection, hold down the Alt key and drag the mouse.

4) To close the selection border, double-click the mouse button.

The Magic Wand Tool

The Magic Wand is used to select areas of an image based upon color. This tool is your best choice if you would like to select a solid background. Adjust the tolerance level in Options bar to be able to select certain color with different levels.

To use the Magic Wand Tool:

1) Select the Magic Wand Tool from the Toolbox.

2) Set the desired options in the Options Bar. In our example below, the tolerance level in the Options bar was changed to 100. It means that the magic wand can detect up to 100 levels of the same color.
3) Click the color you want to select.

Similar to other applications, Photoshop allows you to undo and redo tasks that has been committed. All you need to do is to press CTRL + Z for undo and CTRL + Y for redo. However, the Undo and Redo command in Photoshop can only allow you to do one task backward and one task ahead. Do not fret. There are other ways to be able to step several tasks in Photoshop. You can press ALT+CTRL+Z for Undo and ALT+CTRL+Y for Redo. You can also make use of the History Palette to Undo or Redo.

If the History Palette is not visible, click on the Window menu and select History.

Photoshop 101: Removing Pimple

Just imagine that it’s a your wedding day. A pimple popped on your face when you wake up. You feel depressed because you won’t look good in your special day and it will appear in all your memorabilia.

Before you sulk in your pillows, let me inform you that there is still another way to remove that pimple in your photographs. Thanks to Photoshop, you can still look good on your wedding pictures.

Here are very easy steps to remove pimples on your face in your photograph:

1. Open the picture in Photoshop.

2. Using the Zoom tool, enlarge to the area that needed to be retouched.

3. In the Photoshop toolbox, select the Spot Healing Brush tool.

4. Adjust the diameter of the brush to match the size of a pimple. You can use the open square bracket ([) and close square bracket (]) keys on your keyboard to easily resize the brush diameter.

5. Click on a pimple.

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until all pimples are removed.

7. You can now save your file.

Summer Workshops

Summer is just in the corner. Some people would like to spend their time at home or travelling. Some people also opt to make their summer productive by joining workshops.

I am happy to invite you to participate in several workshops I am involve with. The Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago of ADZU has invited me and my best students to give a workshop on Digital Art application as part of their "Art Escapades for Summer 2008" program. The outputs of the program will have the chance to be exhibited at the gallery during the culminating activity. Here are the IT courses:

Flash Animation
Age: 13 and up
Days: MWF 1:30 - 3:00 PM

This class introduces basic animation concepts using Flash Animation. Students will be introduced to ways on how to spice up their website or make that wacky idea come to motion.

Basic Photoshop

Photoshop is an image editing application that has a wide range of tools and commands that alter an image digitally. Learn Photoshop's tool, palette and restoration techniques, layering, filters and managing your workflow and shortcuts.

Days: TTH 3:00 - 4:30 PM
Fee: PhP 1,200
Instructor: Cedrick Zabala (BSIT Student)
Students will learn to use this professional vector-based illustration program that includes tools for drawing and manipulatin graphics for print and web publication.

Basic Web Page Design
Age: 16 and up
Days: TTH 1:00 - 3:30 PM
Fee: PhP 1,200
Instructor: Ryann Z. Elumba
This class covers the basic skills needed to create new or update existing web sites. Students will learn how to create a basic web page from scratch, save it as a template, and use the template to create content pages.

Video Editing and Special Effects
Age: 16 and up
Days: Saturdays (6 meetings)
Fee: PhP 2,500
Instructor: Ryann Z. Elumba
Enter a new video editing experience with Adobe's nonlinear video editing software. This session will introduce you to Premiere's basic interface and will demonstrate some of the application's new and exciting features. This session will also cover effective ways of adding transitions and effects as well as creating and adding titles.

The 1st Zamboanga Digital Art Exhibit

The Ateneo Informatics and Computing Guild and BSIT major in Multimedia and Animation of Ateneo de Zamboanga University organized the 1st Zamboanga Digital Art Exhibit at the Ateneo Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago on March 10 to 15, 2008. The exhibit was a first of its kind in Zamboanga City and the region as it showcased 41 digital artworks composed of vexels, digital illustrations, digital photography, image manipulation and 3D model. The artworks were created by BSIT students and myself. Animation and films with special effects produced by students were also shown in the gallery.

Personal Note: I would like to thank the sponsors -- Discover Graphics, Ceejay's Enterprises and Smartbro for helping us out. Applause also goes to the officers of AICG and BSIT volunteers. Kudos to Cedrick Zabala, AICG President for making the exhibit possible.

It's also encouraging to hear that the ADZU administration liked the exhibit. I wanted to show them that the investment they gave to the BSIT program was not in vain. The number of visitors is also very heartwarming.

Vinta Collection
